Our Farm

HISTORY. Great Grandpa Harrand purchased this land in the early 1900s. He farmed this land mostly for pickles and cattle, even becoming a receiver and grader for local pickle growers. Heather’s grandma grew up on the farm, helping her family do farm chores. We are so happy to keep this land productive and in the family, making this a centennial farm.

FARM SUSTAINBILITY. The role we have in maintaining ecological integrity and sustainability on our farm is a top priority for us. We see ourselves as stewards of the land, lucky enough to be responsible for one small piece of it. Our focus is to be as efficient as possible on the ground we farm, leaving plenty of land for native habitat to share with the other tenants of our land.

The goals of our farm are to:

  • Cultivate vibrant, healthy soils through the implementation of effective crop rotations, the integration of cover and green manure crops, the utilization of compost, and the application of natural mineral supplements.

  • Utilize environmentally friendly farming methods, preventing erosion, and minimizing pollution to soil, water, and air, and avoiding the use of synthetic chemicals.

  • Innovate! Develop new methods and tactics that work for small to mid-size farms like our own, sharing and collaborating with other farmers to preserve farmland and farming knowledge for the benefit of generations to come.

  • Foster biodiversity and play an active role in its conservation on the farm, including the restoration of native grassland ecosystems to create a thriving ecological community.

  • Collaborate with our community and support agricultural markets and infrastructures that empower small farms to establish local food systems, promoting a collective commitment to the well-being of our planet and our local economy.

  • Practice energy conservation whenever possible.

  • Conserve the nutritional value and safety of food and feed through careful handling during and after harvest.
